(No real spoilers, just impressions)
I've watched up through episode 12 of Love Between Fairy and Devil, which puts me about one-third of the way through it (not all the episodes have dropped on Netflix yet but I understand there will be 36 total). It's a xianxia (high fantasy) Cdrama starring Esther Yu, Dylan Wang Hedi, and Zhang Linghe (who I know because he plays Hua Cheng in the long-awaited-and-maybe-never-arriving live-action of Heaven Official's Blessing).*
So far it has been very much a situational comedy with hints of darker, more epic things coming along down the line. The special effects, set design, and creature effects are truly a cut above anything I've seen in a Cdrama yet; they definitely spent some money on these.
The show is very tropey in the best sense of the word; there can be such a delight in seeing familiar scenarios play out. You know what's going to happen, but the point is the fun, enjoyment, and satisfaction of seeing it and the little twists and turns along the way.
I'm very excited to carry on and see what the rest of the show holds for me!
*I just realised that I accidentally gave three examples of names, all structured differently, which makes for a good lesson on modern Chinese names. "Esther Yu" is formatted English Name Family Name in standard Western format, and Esther is of course, her English name (I can't recall her Chinese personal name just now). "Dylan Wang Hedi" is formatted English name Family Name Personal Name. "Zhang Linghe" is formatted Family Name Personal Name; this is how it's done in China usually. It's typically celebrities that tend to have English names and even then only some of them, Zhang Zhehan, for instance, doesn't.
