Snowflake Challenge Catch-Up 6-9

Challenge #6: In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

The theme of my recs is stories I would've normally skipped but that I'm glad I took a chance on.

the adventures of Elf Guy by burdenedwithgloriousfandoms (Silmarillion)
This is so adorable, and, like, the idea of Maglor trolling Tolkien fandom by pretending to be a Maglor cosplayer seems perfectly on-brand to me. :D

Mersday's Child Has Far To Go by Cinaed (Silmarillion)
This is really cute and I absolutely love the way it changes canon. Eruanna is a literal gift from Eru who saves Túrin simply by existing. Also, Andróg was written in this so perfectly!

Were Stars To Burn by RoseCathy (Red Dwarf)
A Dave Lister/Arnold Rimmer fic based on The Blue Castle by LM Montgomery? It's a super cracky premise but a really fun and delightful story.

Challenge #7: In your own space, create your own challenge.

My challenge is this: at some point this year, write a fic for a canon or a ship that no one has ever written before. It can be as short as a drabble or as long as you like.

Challenge #8: In your own space, create a wishlist.

I'm going to concentrate here on things that people reading this might actually be able to fulfil, rather than impossibilities or stuff that no one has much control over.

I wish for:

  • Fic based on any of the prompts in my 2020 Innumerable Stars letter, my 2020 Relationshipping letter, or indeed any prompt on any letter I've written anytime in the past, with the caveat of noting DNWs, etc, for my more recent letters as being the ones currently in force.

  • Fanart, podfic, translations, and any other transformational works for any of my stories. I have a wide-ranging permissions policy for a reason!

  • Recommendations for fic in any of these fandoms: any Tolkien fandom, MCU, Star Trek, Star Wars, Sherlock Holmes, any Sutcliff fandom, Doctor Who (2005-onward only), any classic children's lit, or any other fandom I've written in before that you think I might enjoy.

  • Recommendations for video games. My preference is for worldbuilding or puzzle games, especially things with a Zen or infinite play element. I can't do anything violent or anything involving lots of fighting or jumping around. Some games I enjoy include Tetris Effect on the Quest, Bejeweled, Pharaoh, the Lego games, the Civilization games, A Short Hike, etc. I use Steam to play on my Mac and I have a Quest.

  • Icons and graphics! I've not used up half of my icon slots for DW and I feel the need for more. I love rainbows, butterflies, eight-pointed stars, space, etc, and of course any of the fandoms above are wonderful.

  • Things that come in the post! I love giving and receiving tangible presents, such as sweets, jewellery and other crafted items, books, or simply written letters and postcards. It meant so much to receive lovely Christmas cards and sympathy cards from some of you recently.

Challenge #9: In your own space, brag about yourself. Tell us what things you've done that you're proud of; the things that make you the wonderful person you are.

This is the hardest challenge yet for me, I really struggle with talking about myself in any way that might be considered bragging. I know I'm applying the worst double standard here, because I love it when my friends think well of themselves and appreciate their accomplishments. So, time to appreciate mine.

I'm proud of my activism, both past and present. In many ways, it's been so difficult and yet so rewarding. There are things I'm proud of that I talk about, like the workshops I've run at BiCon and the local bi group I founded, and there are things I don't discuss much, like being in 'the room where it happened' when my then-employer was founding a new LGBT network, and ensuring that trans and bi people got full representation and a voice. That was back in 2009!

I'm proud of my history in fandom. I've done a lot, I like to think, not only in fanworks, but in archiving and founding and creating and most of all in encouraging. It's been one of my greatest joys to see people I've beta'd for and given encouragement to go on to create amazing fanworks. I like to think I've been relatively non-wanky, though I've had my moments like everyone has, and that I've consistently pushed my own boundaries and comfort zones. I've written works that I now enjoy rereading, and that really is the highest praise anyone can give themselves.

And last but most certainly not least, I am proud of my everyday, of the little things I do and have done. The last three years have been really difficult in many ways, especially 2020. I did my best even though it was very tough at times, and I'll continue to do my best as my husband and I (and cats!) move forward into the future.

I don’t know if any of these would be okay.

You’re right to be proud, personally and in fandom (and both together) you’ve done so much!

I'm going to recommend two games I really liked, though I'm not sure they might be your thing:

Seasons after fall is a nice 2d game that has some jumping (platforming) to move around but progresses mostly through finding things & solving puzzles and it also has a cute story.

Shadowgate is a point-and-click game (so no real-time fighting or anything like that), where you also progress via solving puzzles and killing the occasional enemy (sometimes solving a puzzle in order to do so). It's a fantasy game that owes a lot to LOTR in terms of story. (I'd recommend the remake because the original is a /really/ old game).

You should definitely be proud, especially of your everyday. <3

Oh no I've seen the Red Dwarf fic and I am compelled to read it *hides

It sounds like you've done a lot to be proud of! What was your experience of BiCon like?
