Promote What You Love!
A couple of days ago, I read the most recent Silmarillion Writer's Guild newsletter, which included an interview with Elleth, my heroine of female characters and femslash promotion. In that interview, a principle of fandom that I hold very close to my heart was discussed: promote what you love rather than bashing what you hate. It's the best way to make fandoms grow, to encourage a positive fannish culture, and to make this hobby a true pleasure and joy.
So in the spirit of "Promote What You Love," I'd like to propose a meme: Promote seven things you love! These can be individual fanworks, canons, or things that have nothing to do with fandom at all, just stuff you like and you think other people should know about.
From me to you, here's seven things I love.
1. Overtime by Charlie Stross, a short Christmas-themed story set in the Laundry Files universe (you don't need to know anything about Laundry Files). Absolutely nails the existential horror of the British Christmas office party.
2. The Heaven Official's Blessing donghua (Chinese version of anime). It's available on Netflix, subtitled, and there's an English dub on Funimation which is excellent. Hopes are high for a second season coming in 2023 (we know it's complete, we're just waiting for it to be released). Here's an AMV as a teaser for you: Love Me Like You Do by Styura Fed.
3. Sweet Dream by BlueBelleBarrett, a Word of Honor Wen Kexing/Zhou Zishu story written for a prompt I posted that exceeded all of my heartfelt hopes. The prompt is fully detailed here, but in brief: after spending one day together as children, Wen Kexing remembered Zhou Zishu as a sweet dream throughout all the years that followed, turning eventually from innocent to sexual. Then they meet again. This fic is SOOOO GOOD, it fulfilled everything I wanted and then some, including an exploration of Wen Kexing's dissociation. It's basically part of canon to me now.
4. Kictor! She's a Cdrama youtuber with a focus on TGCF. She reviews and discusses the books as they're released, talks about the donghua, manhua, merch, and various related things, does cosplay and comedy and talks about fandom. She's interviewed the English dub voice actors for Hua Cheng and Xie Lian, and her video on what entering the TGCF fandom is like completely won my heart in 2 minutes 16 seconds.
5. SheepandPencils' Skate Bangkok 2022 ice-skating performance to Lonely Dream by Zhang Zhehan. Sheepandpencils is an incredibly talented fanartist as well as ice skater, and an absolute credit to Word of Honor and Junzhe fandom.
6. Shuoshuo Chinese, a Youtuber who makes helpful videos that have really been so useful to my understanding of Mandarin in the last year. She's up-to-date in ways that a lot of language learning isn't, fun to watch, and delivers information in cute, entertaining segments, providing everything a person might need to understand the lesson.
7. And last but certainly not least, The Downward Spiral by
grundy, a Silm Second Age fanfic about Tar-Míriel, Ar-Pharazôn, and Amandil, and the complicated relationship between them. This story got me excited about and interested in a part of the legendarium that doesn't tend to be my focus, and it contains a twist on canon that I absolutely love.
Now for the best part: go forth and post your own things that you love! I'm so excited to see what they might be!
