Dear Gen Ex Author:
What I generally love to see in fanworks:
- Loyalty and genuine devotion.
- Meaningful sacrifice.
- When repressed emotion comes out, especially if it's about love that the character thinks is unrequited but turns out to be requited.
- A strong sense of love and caring.
- Hope in the midst of despair.
- Endearments and affection.
- Desperate need or longing for love (that is then provided).
- Rescues from the brink of death.
- Eucatastrophe (the opposite of catastrophe - a sudden joyous turn in a story).
- Quarrels and fights, high emotional stakes and risks, passion raging out of control, desperation, and sudden impulses.
- Canon-divergence AUs.
- Meeting someone for the first time and feeling an instant kinship with them.
- Loyalty or devotion to a cause or a person.
- Working together like a well-oiled machine.
- Battlefield friendships.
- Enemies working together to defeat a common greater enemy (then figuring out that they aren't really enemies anymore).
- Admiring someone's skill or competence.
(Please take all references to love above to mean non-romantic and non-sexual love for this exchange.)
For art: Visual depictions of any of the prompts would be really good - I've tried to give prompts that can be depicted as art in some way. But mainly I'm interested to see your vision of the setting and the characters. I like seeing emotion on faces, inventive use of colour, all types of bodies and skin colours, long gorgeous hair or creative hairstyles, 'action shots,' and art that makes me consider the character(s) in a different light.
What I don't want:
- Extensive torture or fic that's all about mental or physical suffering.
- Graphic depictions of violence or gore -- mentions of injuries, etc, are okay, vivid descriptions or graphic art are not.
- Excessive miscommunication, angst, or betrayal of trust.
- AUs, other than canon-divergence. I prefer the characters in their canon setting.
- Character bashing -- I love all the characters!
The Silmarillion & other histories of Middle-earth
- Maedhros & Nerdanel
Happy times in Valinor when Maedhros is very young and eager to help his mother.
- Finduilas & Finrod Felagund
What kind of relationship did Finduilas have with her uncle/great-uncle? What do they have in common?
- Dior & Celegorm
I'd love to see an encounter between them long before they fight in Doriath, perhaps when Dior is a youth and has no idea who Celegorm is. (Celegorm knows exactly who Dior is.)
- Celebrimbor & Finduilas
How did these cousins get along? Was Finduilas slightly afraid of her older Fëanorian cousin before he set her mind at ease?
- Aredhel & Turgon
Why did Aredhel go to Gondolin with Turgon?
- Aredhel & Fingolfin
A happy moment between Aredhel and her father in Valinor, before either of them had any worries or cares.
- Maedhros & Maglor
I headcanon these two to be about 20 years apart in age, so not quite children together. But I'd like to hear about a time when a young Maedhros showed child Maglor something that inspired him.
- Curufin & Fëanor
The moment when Fëanor realised that this son -- out of all of his sons -- was the one who had the skills to keep up with him in the forge.
The Lord of the Rings
- Aragorn & Halbarad
I'd love to see them working together to protect their people. What does Halbarad think of Aragorn, who is often away on errands of his own, and who was raised in Rivendell?
- Ioreth & Ioreth's Sister(s)
Ioreth's childhood must have been wonderful for her to remember it so fondly. Was she the oldest of her sisters or the youngest? What was it like in Imloth Melui?
- Éowyn & Ioreth
A moment between Éowyn and Ioreth as Éowyn recovers in the Houses of Healing.
- Celeborn & Elladan & Elrohir
I'd love to hear more about the twins' relationship with their grandfather. What does he think about their vendetta against the Orcs who captured their mother/his daughter? What is life like in Rivendell after Elrond is gone?
- Aragorn & Bilbo Baggins
I just love the idea of ten-year-old Estel meeting a hobbit for the first time! It was the start of a beautiful friendship.
- Arwen & Ioreth
I love the idea of Arwen getting to know Ioreth. Maybe she's Arwen's midwife for Eldarion? Or maybe Arwen starts to suffer from some sort of illness that only mortals get (a cold or something equally trivial) and she's all panicky about it (OMG I'M DYING IT'S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW ESTEL HELP) and Ioreth reassures her.
- Arwen & Elrond
They said goodbye to each other in the hills near Edoras. What did they talk about, that last day? How do you say goodbye to someone eternally? (How much does Elrond compare it with his goodbye to Elros?)
The Hobbit (movies)
- Legolas Greenleaf & Tauriel
When and where did Legolas and Tauriel first meet? Were they childhood friends, perhaps, or did he come to her rescue when her parents were killed and insisted that his father adopt her?
- Galadriel | Artanis & Tauriel
Tauriel comes to Lothlórien for a visit and asks to look into Galadriel's Mirror.
The Hobbit (book)
- Gandalf & Thranduil
What does Thranduil think of Gandalf? Perhaps show a first meeting prior to the events of The Hobbit?
- Bilbo Baggins & Gandalf
Gandalf is famous in the Shire. Tell some of the tales about him that Bilbo heard as a child.
- Bilbo Baggins & Elrond
Bilbo's stay in Rivendell was the start of a beautiful friendship between him and Elrond. Show what they first thought of each other, the ancient half-Elf, and the middle-aged Halfling, when they first met.
Crossover Fandom
- Valancy Stirling (Blue Castle) & Anne Shirley (Anne of Green Gables)
I just want them to meet! I think Valancy is 1920s, so she would be meeting fifty-something Anne Blythe who has lost her son in the War. Maybe they're at a boring social event with their respective husbands, post-Blue Castle, and figure out that they are kindred spirits?
