Very true! I wanted to put it in an online and fannish context because fandom is where I've seen most of this behaviour but it can definitely happen in any organisation or community. I'm sure this has happened in activism spaces, in workplaces, in religious organisations, in community associations, on Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, any website you can name where people talk, at some point someone is going to come along and try this.
