End-of-year fanfic meme

Saw [personal profile] independence1776 doing this one and figured it might be nice as a gentle toe back out into fannish waters again.

Pairing/Genre/Fandom you wouldn’t have predicted in January 2019: Nothing. Everything I wrote last year was Tolkien, and there wasn't anything wildly different or unpredictable.

New Fandoms Written In: None.

Biggest surprise: Loss At Losgar, my sonnet on who's really at fault for the burning of the ships. A surprise because I genuinely thought someone, somewhere, would've come up with this idea before me.

Biggest disappointment: Not getting enough time/energy/inspiration to write in general. (All three have to be present, but the most I tended to get last year was two, and then after the debacle that was Innumerable Stars, that went down to none, and still hasn't recovered yet.)

And, of course, the whole IS debacle itself, resulting in me deleting a story, which was heartbreaking to do. It still sits there in my Scrivener docs, but will never be posted again. I am never making myself that vulnerable again.

Hardest to write: The deleted fic. It was a pairing I had never written, I was incredibly anxious to try and get it right, and I was writing about a kink that is very dear to my heart and thus felt exposed and vulnerable about it.

Most Fun: Loopholes and Choices. It was SO much fun.

‘Holy crap, that’s wrong, even for you’ fic: The graphic violence/torture in Reckless Abandon, I guess. Not that I didn't enjoy the fuck out of writing Sauron being tortured, but it was not the sort of thing I tend to write a lot.

Most underappreciated: I know it's about a very minor character, and it's poetry, but damnit, Dreams Might Be Filled With Lies deserves a whole lot more kudos than it currently has.

Best Fic: Going by kudos, it's the Legolas/Gimli Further Apart, Closer Together, which I really liked (and would have liked to develop more).

Favourite Fic: Gotta be Cinderfëa and the Seven Princes. Love that Fëanorian OT8.

Risks: Not really any, other than the deleted fic.

Angstiest Fic: I don't think I really did much in the way of angst in 2019. Too busy living it to write it, I guess.

Best Banter: The snark-off between Fëanor and Morgoth in Cinderfëa. :D

Porniest Fic: Got to be the OT8 with an additional Celebrimbor on the edges in Reckless Abandon.

Schmoopiest: A Little More Action, probably.

Sexiest Fic: Worth It. :D

Best Sex Scene: I can't choose, I'm just going to say Reckless Abandon, Worth It, Laundry Day, and Cinderfëa are all equally excellent.

Sweetest Fic: I honestly think From the Desk of Maedhros is really sweet. This is Maedhros doing his best to regain his optimism and hope after Angband, and he's exercising all his diplomat's training on members of his own family, and frankly it's adorable.

Best Lines:
"Fëanáro," [Tórin] said firmly, "you shall go to the ball!
-- Cinderfëa and the Seven Princes

“That would surely be enough of a consequence,” Fëanáro said lightly. “‘To the Everlasting Darkness doom us if our deed faileth.’ Nothing to worry about. It’s not going to fail. We are going to win our jewels back, and light up the benighted lands of Middle-earth, as Káno says, until Day’s ending.”
-- Loopholes and Choices

"I have written my remorse in stone, all across this city."
-- Celebrimbor, Reckless Abandon

“Panyare and Elquasse,” [Finarfin said], “we now live in a new era. The old ways of the days under the Trees are gone. The chaos of the Darkness is past. We live under the Sun, in an Aman marred by loss and grief. It is my duty as your King to heal that marring where I can. Your friendship has been sundered, but it can be rebuilt. I ask only that you try.”
-- Setting A Precedent

Conclusions: 2019 was the year of me burning out on writing and fandom for a while. I haven't written anything since the beginning of October, and I'm not planning to write anything other than a short fic for Chocolate Box until March. I do want to write again, and I'm slowly working on getting that time/energy/inspiration trifecta back. We'll see how 2020 goes.
